Given the soon to be updated TGC website (as mentioned on their blog), with the many excellent features they will offer, we announce a retooling of Dog Fight: Starship Edition will commence. The retooled release will offer the game as a board game with CCG mechanics, rather than a CCG with tactical board game mechanics.
The starter decks will be combined into Core Sets, each of either 3 or 4 ships. These Core Sets will include more than just the 32 card decks so as to provide a more complete gaming experience. They will also include counters, dice, and the maps. All this will be packaged in a more traditional game box, with full color art, as any respectable game should be.
The 10x16 map sheets might be replaced with traditional chipboard backed foldable boards. Eventually, this option will be provided by TGC but it may have a significant affect on the use of Map Cards, already available for Dog Fight. This map card feature of the game makes for customizable maps every game, and it is worth keeping. We'll be able to make a definite decision on this after TGC makes its final news release on the details, such as board dimensions and such.
Booster packs will be replaced with larger expansions. Each of these expansions will include lots of cards and most likely a new map as well (such as the aforementioned Campaign maps).
The game cards will also undergo a face lift. The Action Icon in the upper right corner of the stats area indicates what form of card it is (Gear card, Star card, etc.). In the current card design these icons are labeled as simply "action" icons. In the updated template design these icons will be labeled with the form name.
Also, the card type indicated below the card art will stand out a bit more. The background bar is a little darker here and the white text is a bit larger, making it easier to read. Any other ideas for making the cards more play-friendly are welcomed (see the included graphic for a closer look).
Once these changes are finalized and implemented all the currently released sets will be removed from The Game Crafter's website.
Suggestions for Core Set contents are needed. The current starter decks do not have to be simply recreated for the Core Sets. Ideas from the active players of the tribe would be most helpful in making for a better game. Please comment here.
